UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State faculty members using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in their research are invited to join an informational meeting announcing a new research center in this area that is being created by the Institute for Computational and Data Sciences (ICDS). The center, known as the Research Center on Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to Industry (AIMI), will connect Penn State researchers with industry partners that aim to fund new areas of AI and ML research. The meeting will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 23 via Zoom. Pre-registration is required.
“ICDS has supported and collaborated on AI and ML research across the University for many years, and have built strong partnerships with numerous industry leaders who are interested in advancing the science of AI and ML,” said Jenni Evans, professor of meteorology and atmospheric science and director of ICDS. “This new research center leverages our industry partnerships and provides opportunities for Penn State researchers to pursue new research with a true societal impact. At the same time, it connects our industry partners with interdisciplinary experts to help solve critical challenges they face.”
At the meeting, Evans; Shashank Priya, associate vice president for research and director of strategic initiatives; Vasant Honavar, professor and Edward Frymoyer chair of information sciences and technology, and associate director of ICDS; and Guido Cervone, professor of geography and meteorology and atmospheric science, and associate director for ICDS, will outline the procedure to join the research center and propose new areas of research to fund.
Faculty interested in submitting research proposals will be asked to provide additional information on their proposal in early December. Select projects will progress to a second meeting to pitch their research to center members before a final group of projects is funded.
Faculty will need to register in advance for the meeting. Faculty who are interested in the research center but unable to attend are encouraged to register so that they receive a link to the meeting recording.
Questions about the AIMI research center should be directed to Todd Price, ICDS industry relations director for research, at tup77@psu.edu.
