Judy Chicago Art Education Award invites submissions

Application deadline is June 1, 2021

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Through the Flower, a nonprofit art organization, invites artists, scholars and educators to apply for the 2021 Judy Chicago Art Education Award.

Named in honor of one of the Feminist Art Movement’s key founders, the award is given annually in partnership with Penn State and is accompanied by a $2,500 prize along with a certificate signed by Chicago. The application deadline is June 1, 2021.

The award was established in 2011 to support projects that use Judy Chicago materials found at any of the institutions that comprise the online Judy Chicago Research Portal. These institutions include:

Criteria for the completed or proposed project must include evidence of use of one or more of the archives for research or teaching projects. Projects should encompass feminist goals such as understanding and appreciation for the achievements of women, gender equity/justice or the use of Judy Chicago’s participatory art pedagogy informed by feminist principles. The applicant’s project also must include a public presentation such as a lecture, publication or class activity. 

Award submissions will be accepted online until midnight Eastern time on June 1. The 2021 award ceremony will be held in Belen, New Mexico, at the Through the Flower Art Space. For complete details, visit The Judy Chicago Art Education Award

Co-recipients of the 2020 award were visual artist, photographer and art educator Camellia Termini of Los Lunas, New Mexico, and Sarah Walser, a third year medical student at Penn State College of Medicine’s University Park campus. Past awardees’ projects are available via the Judy Chicago Art Education online archive of award-winning projects. 

The Judy Chicago Art Education Award, funded by MaryRoss Taylor, is made possible by Through the Flower and is administered by Penn State University Libraries with support from the Penn State School of Visual Arts.
