UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Arts and Design Research Incubator (ADRI) will host a daylong symposium, Matters of Art and Design Education (MADE), from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, April 27, at the ADRI, 16 Borland Building.
The broader goal of the symposium is to promote interdisciplinary teaching and innovative thinking in line with College of Arts and Architecture priorities and to speculate on the future of design at Penn State and beyond. Thematic threads will include design for all, maker culture, universal design, cultural preservation, ecological sustainability, spatial literacy, social practice and participatory frameworks. Aaron Knochel, assistant professor of art education in the School of Visual Arts, is planning the symposium, which is open to the entire Penn State community. Knochel said, “our focus for the symposium is really trying to grapple with the opportunities design, as both a methodology and way of thinking, offers to impact innovative approaches to curriculum in higher education.”
The event will feature two keynote speakers. Robin Vande Zande, professor of art and design education at Kent State University, will kick off the event with “Imagine a World in Which….” After lunch, Michael Gayk, assistant professor of metal and digital design and fabrication at State University of New York at New Paltz, will present “Natural Section: Design Rigor and the Morphological Process.”
Additional presentations and panel discussions include representation from the fields of engineering, visual arts, architecture and landscape architecture. Afternoon working group sessions will address topics on universal design, spatial literacy and 4-D thinking, and maker cultures.
