The Office of the Senior Vice President for Research has announced that Mike Stedelin, has been named executive director of the Office of Research Information Systems, effective May 1. Stedelin will succeed Jim Taylor, associate chief information officer for Research, who is departing Penn State at the end of April for an opportunity with Arizona State University.  Stedelin will report to the senior vice president for Research.

“We look forward to the leadership and direction that Mike will bring to this essential role, as the breadth and depth of his expertise will be tremendous assets for our research enterprise.” said Lora Weiss, senior vice president for Research. “We also would sincerely like to thank Jim for his excellence as associate chief information officer for Research. His contributions have enabled us to better position the University in our path as a leading research institution and in our mission as a land-grant university."

Stedelin’s role will build on the vision and leadership of Taylor, to execute the transformation of Penn State research information in a way that better serves the research enterprise through elevation of systems, processes and policies. Stedelin will also provide technical leadership and expertise to Penn State faculty, staff and administration to further enhance research activities and develop best practices and solutions for addressing issues broadly across the research enterprise, further enabling the University's research community to bring innovations, solutions and creative works to its sponsors and communities, especially during a time when federal sponsors are placing additional requirements on sponsored research projects.

“Mike has been a tremendous leader and collaborator within the Penn State research ecosystem,” said John Hanold, associate vice president for Research and director, Office of Sponsored Programs. “His strategic thinking, leadership skills and expertise of data, analytics and systems specific to research operations are great assets to our University as we continue to drive innovation across the research organization. I am confident that Mike will bring a strong dynamic to the efficient execution of research."

Stedelin has worked within Penn State since 2017, holding various positions of growing leadership within the Office of Research Information Systems. He holds a bachelor of science degree in computer management information systems and an MBA from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
