UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Fred Rogers, who became a neighbor to generations of children through his television show, will once again be seen at homes across the country.

The new Mister Rogers forever postage stamp will be dedicated during a public ceremony beginning at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, at the American Philatelic Center in Bellefonte. The stamp, which features Rogers in his famous red cardigan alongside puppet King Friday, commemorates the 50th anniversary of the first national broadcast of “Mister Rogers' Neighborhood.”

The free event, co-hosted by WPSU Penn State and the American Philatelic Society, lasts until 4 p.m. and will include an appearance from David Newell, who portrayed delivery man Mr. McFeely in the PBS show.

Newell will appear in character for the dedication and will be available for photos after the ceremony. Kids, who bring an envelope, can receive a complimentary Mister Rogers stamp and mail their letter at the APC post office.

Visitors also can:

  • Purchase Mister Rogers stamps at the APC post office.
  • Tour the APC stamp rooms and research library.
  • Make their own stamp cachet and learn about stamp collecting.
  • Take a photo with the Daniel Tiger and Trolley standee TV set pieces.
  • Receive a WPSU/PBS KIDS Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood activity booklet for children ages 8 and under.

The U.S. Postal Service will unveil the stamp during a first-day-of-issue dedication ceremony on March 23 at the Fred Rogers Studio in Pittsburgh.
