UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The $2.1 billion research contract that the Applied Research Lab at Penn State received from the U.S. Navy will be discussed during the next episode of President Eric J. Barron’s WPSU show, “Digging Deeper,” at 11:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, on WPSU-TV.

Paul E. Sullivan, the executive director of the Applied Research Lab, and graduate researcher Sara Jamshidi will join Barron to discuss the 10-year contract, the largest research contract in the University’s history, which the ARL received in March 2018. It will provide the lab with the necessary resources to conduct research and development to improve U.S. national security.

"This contract demonstrates the great positive impact that Penn State research has on our nation and the world through the breadth and depth of our programs in engineering, technology and applied science,” Sullivan said. “From the deepest part of the ocean to satellites in geosynchronous orbit, ARL provides leading-edge technologies.”

ARL at Penn State is one of 14 Department of Defense University Affiliated Research Centers that have long-term strategic relationships with the DoD and are considered trusted agents. The affiliated research centers provide essential research capabilities, develop new technology for national security applications and provide unbiased technical advice to the DoD and other federal agencies.

The Applied Research Lab, established at Penn State in 1945, is the largest research unit at the University.
