President Barron, experts to discuss cybersecurity on WPSU’s 'Digging Deeper'

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The security risks and dangers posed by advancing smart and cloud-based technologies and how consumers can best protect themselves will be discussed by cybersecurity and technology experts during the next episode of WPSU Penn State’s “Digging Deeper.” The show will premiere at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 4, on WPSU-TV.

Penn State President Eric J. Barron will welcome University experts Peng Liu, professor of information sciences and technology and director of the Center for Cyber-Security, Information Privacy and Trust, and Sascha Meinrath, the Palmer Chair in Telecommunications and director of the X-Lab think tank, for an in-depth discussion on the key issues facing cybersecurity and technology policies, and their impacts on consumers.

In addition to the Sunday morning premiere, “Digging Deeper” will air at 6 p.m. on Dec. 4 on WPSU-TV and at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 8, on WPSU-FM.

The group will discuss several key issues facing consumers, including risks posed by smart devices, the dangers of cloned apps, digital feudalism and discriminatory algorithms that target users online. Meinrath and Liu will also share the research being done at Penn State to protect consumers and the need for more governmental regulation.

Meinrath is a renowned technology policy expert and is internationally recognized for his work during the past two decades as a community internet pioneer and social entrepreneur. Liu’s teaching and research interests include systems security and survivability; database and distributed systems; peer-to-peer systems in e-commerce, digital health care, digital government and command and control; digital infrastructure systems; and web and wireless applications.
