UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The fourth annual College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (EMS) Undergraduate Poster Exhibition will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 2 in the Deike Building (ground floor) on Penn State’s University Park campus. Organized by the EMS Ryan Family Student Center, the poster exhibition provides an opportunity for undergraduate students in EMS to showcase their research, and connect and share their work with other students, faculty, staff and the community. The poster exhibition will include poster presentations by more than 30 EMS undergraduate students. The event is free and open to the public.

“This poster exhibition provides an opportunity for EMS undergraduate students to become better communicators. They learn how to summarize their findings and present them in a visually attractive manner and to gain more sophistication in their presentation skills by concisely and accurately explaining and defending their work,” said Nels Shirer, associate dean of undergraduate education.

Posters will focus on the student’s research experiences, capstone projects, internships, study abroad, embedded travel courses, community-based research, service learning, student clubs, and other educational experiences relevant to the study of earth and mineral sciences. Posters will be judged based on display, content and oral presentation. Volunteer EMS alumni and college faculty will serve as judges. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three posters. The Freshman Outstanding Poster Award, sponsored by Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, will also be awarded to the best freshman poster.

Students and attendees will also have an opportunity to vote for the Student Choice Award by casting votes with money for their favorite poster. All funds collected for the Student Choice Award will be donated to an EMS student charity.

“The student committee who works with me to help with the event has been amazing,” said Del Bright the Giles Writer-In-Residence and organizer of the poster exhibition. “Since early in the semester, Victoria Christensen (materials science and engineering), Emily Fucinato (materials science and engineering), Jennafer Hakun (energy engineering), and John Swab (geography) have been visiting classes and coming up with marketing ideas to get the word out there. They are hoping for a great turn out on Wednesday.”
