UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Earth System Science Center has announced the lineup for its fall 2020 Climate Dynamics seminar series. The series will focus on recent advances in climate science and plans for reducing greenhouse gas emissions at Penn State. The seminars, which are free and open to the public, take place from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays via Zoom.
Links to the individual seminars are available on the ESSC website.
The schedule is as follows:
- Sept. 9: Colin Zarzycki, Meteorology and Atmospheric Science, “Recent developments in algorithmic extreme weather detection in climate data”
- Sept. 16: Lara Fowler, Penn State Law and Institutes of Energy and the Environment, “Managing climate change challenges using dispute resolution tools”
- Sept. 30: Mikael Hiestand, Geography, “Annual variations in latent and sensible heat fluxes under differing synoptic regimes in the U.S. Corn Belt”
- Oct. 14: Joseph Clark, Meteorology and Atmospheric Science, “The role of horizontal temperature advection on arctic amplification”
- Oct. 28: Mingyu Park, Meteorology and Atmospheric Science, “The impact of climate model bias on future projections: Old biases die hard”
- Nov. 11: Xingchao Chen, Meteorology and Atmospheric Science, “The roles of different cloud systems in the atmospheric overturning circulation”
- Dec. 2: Charles Anderson, Institutes of Energy and the Environment, Robert Cooper, Office of the Physical Plant, and Timothy White, Earth and Environmental Systems Institute, “Penn State Carbon Negative (PSUCan): Accelerating the drawdown of greenhouse gas emissions at our University”
The Earth System Science Center is directed by Michael E. Mann, distinguished professor of atmospheric sciences, and supported by the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute.
