‘Volumetrics’ author to be honored for research in ingestive behavior

The Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior will honor Barbara J. Rolls at its annual meeting in July

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior will honor Barbara J. Rolls, Helen A. Guthrie Chair and professor of nutritional sciences, at its annual meeting in July in Denver.

Rolls will receive the 2015 Hoebel Prize for Creativity, which honors a Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior member, at any stage of his or her career, for an exceptional level of creativity and excellence in research on ingestive behavior.

The meeting will be held from July 7 to 11. Rolls will give a presentation, titled “Creativity Needs Some Serendipity,” which will focus on her career path, colleagues who have made an impact in her life, and the importance of her work at Penn State for the past 24 years.

A group of graduate students from the Departments of Nutritional Sciences, and Human Development and Family Studies who are in the USDA Childhood Obesity Prevention Training Program directed by Rolls will also attend the meeting and will present their latest findings.

Rolls is a founding member of the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior and served as president in 1992.

“I’ve always thought of SSIB as my home,” Rolls said, adding that currently she is affiliated with many other organizations that focus on obesity and nutrition. “But SSIB is the genesis of where I come from as a scientist.”

Rolls also holds positions at Penn State in the Department of Biobehavioral Health and the Integrative Biosciences Graduate Program. She is a faculty member of Penn State Hershey College of Medicine’s Neural and Behavioral Sciences Program. Rolls created the Volumetrics diet, publishing four guides to the weight-loss plan.

The Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior is a nonprofit organization committed to advancing scientific research on food and fluid intake and its associated biological, psychological and social processes. It provides a multidisciplinary environment for the free exchange of ideas and information, and serves as a resource for scientific expertise and education on topics related to the study of ingestive behavior.
