Meet the Marshal: Biology student marshal Airianna Scarfo

DUNMORE, Pa. — Penn State Scranton is highlighting the campus' student marshals who will lead their fellow graduates during the 58th commencement ceremony procession on May 9 at The Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple. This series will feature the students selected as marshals for their academic programs.

Airiana Scarfo, majoring in biology with a minor in business, shares insights about her Penn State Scranton journey, future plans and advice for incoming students.

Q: What are your post-grad plans?

Scarfo: My post grad plans are to apply to Penn State University Park for their Forensic Science Program. I am also currently in the interview process for a processing technician at MTF Biologics in Jessup, Pennsylvania.

Q: What was your favorite memory at Penn State Scranton?

Scarfo: My favorite memory was being a dancer for THON Weekend and receiving support from students and faculty.

Q: What was your favorite learning experience?

Scarfo: My favorite learning experience was having the opportunity to take a research class and working one on one with Dr. Van Etten, as well as taking the research we obtained and creating a poster for the Undergraduate Research Fair and Exhibition.

Q: What experience prepared you the most for what is next?

Scarfo: The experience of being a Primary Chair in THON, tutoring, and senator, these leadership roles prepared me to use different skills in the workplace. The skills of creating events, providing good communication, teaching others, and advocating for something that matters.

Q: Who at Penn State Scranton has supported you and how?

Scarfo: Nikki Paolicelli supported me by providing support in running THON on campus, and by teaching me skills to apply to events and campus activities.

Q: Do you have any advice for incoming students beginning their Penn State journey?

Scarfo: Make sure to get involved with clubs and student organizations. When getting involved, you create friendships and connections that you will use after graduating. Never be afraid to ask for help with anything from faculty and staff; they are here to help you.
