DUNMORE, Pa. – Penn State Scranton is highlighting the campus' student marshals who will lead their fellow graduates during the 57th commencement ceremony procession on May 10 at The Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple. In this series, we will feature students selected as marshals for their academic programs. Join us as we explore their academic journeys, insights and advice for future students.
Student Marshal: Jessica Reed
Major: Human Development and Family Studies, B.S.
Q: What are your post-grad plans?
Reed: Masters in Social Work.
Q: What was your favorite memory at Penn State Scranton?
Reed: Bringing my son Ozi into my early childhood education class when we were discussing his age groups development and meeting one of my best friends in the world.
Q: What was your favorite learning experience?
Reed: Having the opportunity to grow, learn and gain confidence in myself that I know will serve me well, not only in my professional life, but personally as well.
Q: What experience prepared you the most for what is next?
Reed: My internship experience with the Children's Advocacy Center of NEPA along with the experience of having conversations and obtaining advice from my HDFS professors have helped me prepare and shape what I want for my future.
Q: Who at Penn State Scranton has supported you and how?
Reed: Former Financial Aid Coordinator Stacy Shattuck was a tremendous help and advocate in getting the funds needed to take courses so I could finish my degree. I don't know if I would have been able to graduate without her help. I had some amazing professors that gave me encouragement, advice, and understanding. I have also made a lifelong friend at Penn State Scranton that gave and still gives tremendous support and encouragement.
Q: Do you have any advice for incoming students beginning their Penn State journey?
Reed: As an adult learner, I would say to the incoming students that you may have a track or plan that you are starting here at Penn State Scranton and that is fantastic. But I really encourage you to use this beginning as an opportunity to explore different areas that may interest you as well. Take that art or music class if you have had an interest in the arts but never got a chance to explore. If you always enjoyed being around children, take that early childhood development class. If you find yourself questioning why a person or people behave the way they do, take a Psych class. Who knows? You may find fulfillment in an area that you may not have examined before.
