DUNMORE, Pa. — Penn State Scranton is highlighting the campus' student marshals who will lead their fellow graduates during the 58th commencement ceremony procession on May 9 at The Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple. This series will feature the students selected as marshals for their academic programs.
Katie Zabrowski, majoring in nursing, shares insights about her Penn State Scranton journey, future plans and advice for incoming students.
Q: What are your post-grad plans?
Zabrowski: Post graduation I will be working in the emergency room at Geisinger Community Medical Center.
Q: What was your favorite memory at Penn State Scranton?
Zabrowski: My favorite memory was taking senior pictures with my best friends. It was such a fun moment, but also bittersweet realizing how close we are to the end after everything we’ve been through together. The friendship we built will last a lifetime.
Q: What experience prepared you the most for what is next?
Zabrowski: My capstone in the ER really prepared me for the future by pushing me to think quickly, stay calm under pressure, and handle a wide range of patient situations. It helped build my confidence and showed me that I’m ready to step into my role as a nurse.
Q: Who at Penn State Scranton has supported you and how?
Zabrowski: My professors, especially Annette, and my friends, Katrina and Sam, were such an important part of my journey through college. They encouraged me when things felt overwhelming, helped me push through the hardest moments, and genuinely celebrated every small win with me. I honestly wouldn’t have made it through nursing school without that support and the sense of community we built along the way. Katrina and Sam, thank you for being my anchor through it all.
Q: Do you have any advice for incoming students beginning their Penn State journey?
Zabrowski: My advice is not to be afraid to step out of your comfort zone; you truly will learn so much from new experiences. Stay on top of your classes from the beginning, build a good routine, and get a planner. Finally enjoy everything at Penn State, because time goes by fast.
