UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State Smeal College of Business Office of Diversity Enhancement Programs (DEP) has been recognized with the 2024 Inspiring Programs in Business Award by Insight Into Diversity magazine, a leading publication dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion in higher education.

This award celebrates institutions that actively cultivate inclusive environments, particularly by supporting students from underrepresented backgrounds as they pursue careers in the dynamic field of business.

Joining an esteemed cohort of 27 other recipients, Smeal's Office of Diversity Enhancement Programs will feature in the April 2024 issue of Insight Into Diversity magazine, shining a spotlight on its significant contributions to advancing diversity and inclusion in business education. Insight Into Diversity selected winners of the Inspiring Programs in Business Award based on their efforts to inspire and empower a new generation of young professionals to consider careers in business through mentoring, teaching, research and successful programs and initiatives.

“We are excited to receive this recognition not only because it highlights the tremendous and dedicated work of the Diversity Enhancement Programs Office, but it also shows the dedication of every member of the Smeal community to make the college and Penn State a more engaging and inclusive place," said Jamie Campbell, associate dean for diversity enhancement programs at Smeal. "Ensuring a welcoming and inclusive environment is not just a goal; it's a commitment to recruiting and retaining the best minds."

Insight Into Diversity magazine selected Smeal’s DEP because it fosters a culture that promotes diversity and belonging and provides students with a tight-knit community to flourish, explore academic and career opportunities, and receive guidance and support to navigate in the diverse landscape of today's business world.

“The Office of Diversity Enhancement Programs at the Penn State Smeal College of Business provides students with more than just academic support — we offer a holistic approach to growth. From career exploration to social integration, we guide our students every step of the way, ensuring they emerge as leaders ready to make their mark in an increasingly diverse business landscape,” Campbell said. “Our signature programs, like the Diversity Enhancement Scholars Program, BOSS and the START Conference, provide invaluable and distinct opportunities for the Smeal community to explore, learn and foster meaningful connections. This award also indicates that we are at the forefront of diversity, equity, inclusivity, belonging and accessibility work and are excited to be recognized.”

The Office of Diversity Enhancement Programs provides crucial support for underrepresented students like Zeina Delgado, a fourth-year student in the Smeal College of Business majoring in enterprise risk management and minoring in economics.

“The Office of Diversity Enhancement Programs allowed me to become more involved and introduced me to the Smeal Multicultural Organizations, particularly NABA: The Organization for Black Business Students,” Delgado said. “Throughout my four years at Penn State, my participation in the DEP has provided me the support and guidance that has played a pivotal role in molding me into a capable leader and enriched my experience as a black business student.”

Insight Into Diversity magazine presents timely, thought-provoking news and feature stories on diversity and inclusion in higher education, highlighting best practices and profiles of exemplary programs. A call for nominations for this award was announced in November 2023.

“We know that many business programs are not always recognized for their success, dedication and mentorship for underrepresented students,” said Lenore Pearlstein, owner and publisher of Insight Into Diversity magazine. “We want to honor the schools and organizations that have created programs that inspire and encourage young people who may currently be in or are interested in a future career in business. We are proud to honor these programs as role models to other higher education institutions and beyond.”
