UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Franklin Carter, the William A. Donan Clinical Professor of Marketing in the Penn State Smeal College of Business, received two awards recently at the 2022 American Marketing Association International Collegiate Conference.

Carter was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award, as well as third place in the Hugh G. Wales Faculty Advisor of the Year.

“The Lifetime Achievement Award means longevity and that the students coming through the organization are learning something and doing well outside the group. It recognizes how individuals within the AMA community see the Penn State chapter of AMA and the contributions the organization is making, as well as the contributions the students are making to the marketing community,” Carter said.

“I’m most proud of receiving a Faculty Advisor of the Year award. It’s all about the students, allowing them to learn through trying different things. The time I spend with them is important, as is allowing them to manage the organization and let them lead.”

Under Carter’s leadership, the Penn State AMA chapter has consistently been considered one of the elite student chapters in the world. This year, PSAMA was one of just two chapters named a Platinum Circle Chapter. In 2021, PSAMA was named International Chapter of the Year. That was the second time in the 49-year history of PSAMA that it had received the award. The first time was in the 2017-18 academic year.

PSAMA Executive Board President Matt Lanza explained why the chapter nominated Carter.

“Dr. Carter was nominated for the Lifetime Achievement Award for his dedication and commitment to AMA. Dr. Carter was an AMA collegiate council member for many years. Work on the council included behind the scenes work for AMA's Intercollegiate College Conference, including reading and grading the annual reports of all participating collegiate chapters,” he said.

“Dr. Carter has also been the adviser for PSAMA for more than 10 years, consistently helping our chapter remain a Top 5 chapter and winning the International Chapter of The Year award.”

Lanza said Carter’s leadership and guidance help uniquely prepare PSAMA members in their transition into the workplace.

“Dr. Carter always offers help and guidance to the executive board of PSAMA. He believes in the PSAMA's goal of bridging the gap between what Smeal provides and what the working world is looking for. Therefore, we follow the NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers) attributes that lead us to success in making our members well rounded and ready to hit the ground running for any company,” he said.

“He gives us insight on how to run the organization and listens to our ideas and suggestions. He always will answer our questions whether it is a Wednesday afternoon or a Friday evening. With Dr. Carter's help, PSAMA remains one of the premier marketing organizations within Smeal with more than 200 members.”
