Penn State's Library Information Access System (LIAS), which includes The CAT (University Libraries' online catalog), contains a collection of more than 430 officially licensed databases available through Penn State's network at http://www.lias.psu.edu online. University researchers typically connect to this online collection when off campus by authenticating with their Penn State Access Account I.D. and password. However, remote users also have the option of employing a lesser-known method to connect to LIAS via Penn State's Virtual Private Network (VPN), or the "LIAS-VPN." The VPN is designed to use encryption and other security measures to ensure that only authorized users access the University network and licensed library resources, according to ITS Digital Library Technologies staff. Both methods (authentication and the LIAS-VPN) ensure that remote users can gain secure access to Penn State's library databases and many other Internet resources when connecting from outside of the University's network. More information on accessing LIAS from home or off campus is available at http://css.its.psu.edu/news/liasathome.html online.
