Robert Krimmel has retired from Penn State after 32 years in the athletic department, most recently as assistant athletic director. Krimmel left the University to become director of athletics at Saint Francis University of Pennsylvania. Since his retirement, he has been appointed director of athletics at St. Francis of Loretto University, an NCAA Division I school.
Responsible for overseeing 15 sports during his tenure as an assistant athletic director at Penn State, Krimmel also has served on numerous committees, both at the University and on the national level. He also taught kinesiology and various activity courses and served as the coordinator for undergraduate kinesiology internships since 1999.
Krimmel compiled a 162-38-1 head coaching record during 17 years at the helm of the Penn State women's swimming program (1981-98). He became the Nittany Lions' head coach in 1981 after serving as an assistant with the school's men's and women's swimming teams for eight seasons (eight with men; seven with women). Krimmel coached 61 All-Americans, 11 Academic All-Americans, seven Big Ten Conference individual champions and four U.S. Olympic Trial qualifiers during his head coaching career.
A 1973 graduate of Penn State with a bachelor of science degree in secondary education, Krimmel competed on the Penn State men's swimming team and is a former school record-holder in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events. He earned his master of education degree in counseling from the University in 1974.
