UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Students who are offered first-year admission to Penn State for the 2013-14 academic year will be considered for a new scholarship program. The University is offering these awards of institutional support to enhance the University’s strong academic profile.
"We recognize that the landscape in higher education is competitive, and our current capital campaign, For the Future: The Campaign for Penn State Students, has been addressing this for several years. We are initiating a number of additional efforts like this to ensure that our offers are as attractive as possible," Rob Pangborn, interim provost, said.
A similar effort, known as the Chancellor Award program, has been in place at select Commonwealth Campuses for six years. This new program, known as the Provost Awards, expands upon it.
Funds from the University's Education and General budget line totaling $20 million will be made available for scholarship recipients. Students receiving offers of admission to University Park and all Commonwealth Campuses will be considered. About $12 million in scholarships will be awarded this year. The remaining funds will be reserved for renewing the scholarships for subsequent years based on the student’s academic achievement.
"We want to ensure that a Penn State education is accessible to high-caliber applicants who face challenges in meeting the financial commitment required to attend college, to provide them an additional incentive to attend our University," Pangborn added.
