The Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra will present "Voices of the Silenced" at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 30, in Esber Recital Hall on the University Park campus of Penn State.

James Lyon, violin soloist, is currently professor of music in violin at Penn State and was on the Schreyer Distinguished Honors Faculty from 2011-14. A member of two faculty-based ensembles at Penn State, the Castalia Trio and Duo Concertant, Professor Lyon has played with each of these groups at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall and throughout the world, including much of Asia, Europe and the United States.
He has given masterclasses at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, the Paris Conservatory, and at the Eastman School of Music, among others. He is a Grand Prize Winner of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and has collaborated in performances with members of the Ying and Tokyo Quartets, as well as members of the Lincoln Center Chamber Players. He serves as concertmaster of both the Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra and the Music at Penn’s Woods Festival Orchestra and is on the summer faculty of the Wintergreen Academy in Virgina, where he also performs with the professional orchestra-in-residence.
Timothy Shafer, piano soloist, has concertized extensively throughout the United States, performing, teaching, and discussing the rich heritage of piano repertoire. With degrees in performance from Oberlin Conservatory and Indiana University, Shafer is the recipient of Oberlin’s Rudolf Serkin Outstanding Pianist Award, IU’s annual Concerto Competition, and the Pennsylvania Music Teachers Association Teacher of the Year Award. Shafer is currently professor of piano at Penn State. He is a frequent concerto soloist with regional orchestras, and is active as a chamber musician and soloist. Shafer has written numerous articles on piano repertoire and teaching, as well as sacred music. He is an active workshop clinician and frequent adjudicator for piano competitions. He will appear as guest artist for the Michigan Music Teachers Association State Convention in the Fall of 2017.
