A selection of cultural events happening at the University this weekend and next week

What's happening at Penn State? Here's a look at some of the cultural events taking place at the University this weekend and the next week:

Performances

Movin' On  —  3:30-10:30 p.m., April 26, IM Fields, Park Avenue, University Park campus. Featuring musical artists Grouplove, A$AP Ferg, Snakehips, and Bryce Vine, this student-run annual music festival is free and open to anyone at least 18 years old.

Alabama — 7 p.m., April 27, Bryce Jordan Center, University Park campus. Legendary country band Alabama, the first country act to ever play the Bryce Jordan Center, returns with special guests the Charlie Daniels Band as part of their 50th anniversary tour.

The Doo Wop Project — 3 p.m., April 28, Pullo Center, Penn State York. This show traces the evolution of doo wop music, from the classic sound of five guys singing tight harmonies on a street corner to the biggest hits on the radio today.

Events

An Evening with Robert Ballard — 6 p.m., April 25, Pullo Center, Penn State York. Robert Ballard, founder and president of Ocean Exploration Trust and explorer-in-residence at the National Geographic Society, will be the keynote speaker for the Manufacturers' Association 2019 Annual Event.

Student Farm plant sale — 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., April 26, Headhouse II, located on Curtin Road across from the Berkey Creamery, University Park campus. Penn State’s Student Farm Club will host its fourth annual plant sale fundraiser, featuring more than 30 varieties of garden vegetables, herbs and potted succulents.

Lectures

Research Unplugged: "Mosquito Borne Viral Infections: A Global Program" — 12:30 p.m., April 25, Schlow Centre Region Library, State College. Sujit Kumar Pujhari, assistant research professor in entomology, will discuss how to fight back against diseases carried by mosquitoes. Free.

"Energy Sustainability: The Pride of the Oil & Gas Industry" — 1 p.m., April 29, 114 Steidle Building, University Park campus. Sami Alnuaim, manager of petroleum engineering application services at Saudi Aramco and president of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), will discuss how oil and gas industry is part of the climate change solution.

Stone Memorial Lecture: "The Enemy Within" — 3 p.m., April 30, 112 Buckhout Laboratory, University Park campus.  Zhijian ‘James’ Chen, Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and professor of molecular biology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, will discuss “The Enemy Within – Immune and Autoimmune Responses to Cytosolic DNA.”

Exhibits

"Subjective Spaces: Drawings and Collages by Robert Reed" — Jan. 5-May 19, Palmer Museum of Art, University Park campus. This intimate retrospective features 16 selections from Reed's drawings and collages. Free. 

"Amazing Stories: Recent Acquisitions" — Jan. 12-May 26, Palmer Museum of Art, University Park campus. This exhibit highlights a large selection of prints by artists whose work relies heavily on representation and storytelling to explore ethnic identity and stereotypes, multicultural histories and personal narratives. Free.

"From the Rooftops: John Sloan and the Art of a New Urban Space" — Feb. 3-May 12, Palmer Museum of Art, University Park campus. The museum will feature a major loan exhibition of Ashcan School painter John Sloan, who focused on New York City rooftops in the first half of the 20th century. Free.

"The Secret Lives of Girls and Women" — Jan. 29-Sept. 1, 104 Paterno Library, University Park campus. This exhibit of archival materials from the University Libraries' Eberly Family Special Collections Library examines the spectrum of "secrets" of the female experience. Free.

"The Future is Now: Media Tech Services and Adaptive Technology" — March 25-Sept. 16, 203 Pattee Library, University Park campus. An exhibition of equipment and resources available to students, faculty and staff. Free.
