'Three times seven?' This Abington graduate is 'four times twenty'

Abington, Pa. -- When Penn State Abington student Rissie Zeenberg stepped in front of class during her American History class to discuss her thoughts on World War II, this wasn't just any class presentation - Zeenberg, 81, was giving a firsthand account.

"I told them about some of the things we had to go through, like the rationing of food and shoes. That's a new one for them (traditional-age students), right? We don't ration anything today," said Zeenberg. "I also told them what it was like to travel with my husband, Herman, while he was in the service (Air Force)."

Zeenberg, an honors student with a grade-point average of 3.8, also has been known to give line-dancing demonstrations in class - it's one of her passions, and her favorite dancing tune is "Just a Gigolo" - and warn students of the dangers of amassing credit card debt.

She will earn her bachelor's degree in integrative arts at commencement on Thursday, May 15, along with 180 graduates at Penn State Abington. A successful participant in Penn State Abington's Go 60 program, which provides free classroom instruction for community members over age 60, Zeenberg earned her associate degree a couple of years ago and has not looked back.

Penn State Abington's commencement exercises will be held on Thursday, May 15, 2 p.m., in the Physical Education Building on campus. Speaker is The Honorable Cynthia Baldwin, judge in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas and vice-chairman of Penn State University's Board of Trustees.
