This week's top stories from across Penn State:
STAND FOR STATE: Stand for State, an initiative aimed at empowering Penn Staters to stand up for one another, kicked off this week with University-wide events. Many of the decorations and giveaways were inspired by Green Dot, a national leader in violence prevention education.
HEALTH CARE: Penn State administrators spoke with the Faculty Senate on Jan. 26 about ways to actively involve employees in managing their health care and the shared responsibility of keeping University health care plans affordable in the future.
NEW MARKETING VP: Tracy Powell, vice president of distribution marketing for A+E Networks, was named associate vice president for marketing at Penn State.
NOT TRASH: An audit conducted by the HUB Green Team and Penn State's Sustainability Institute revealed that much of what's being placed in trash bins could be recycled or composted.
RISING TEMPS: Record-setting temperatures over the past century and a half are extremely unlikely to have occurred without human-caused climate change, but the odds of that happening are not quite as low as previously reported, according to an international team of meteorologists.
CHURCHILL SCHOLARSHIP: Penn State senior Ramya Gurunathan was selected to receive a prestigious Churchill Scholarship, a highly sought-after program that allows American college students to pursue graduate studies in engineering, mathematics or the sciences at the University of Cambridge.
HALL OF FAME: Former Penn State running back Curt Warner is among two honorees elected to the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.
