UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The HUB-Robeson Galleries presents ARC Studio’s Premiere, the inaugural exhibition of Andrew Castañeda’s recent photo and painting works from July 25, 2022 - Jan. 29, 2023, in Art Alley in the HUB-Robeson Center.

Andrew Castañeda, from southern California, has work in two private collections: the American Museum of Ceramic Arts in Pomona, California; and the Kansas City Art Institute Teaching Collection. Castañeda earned his bachelor of fine arts in ceramics from the Kansas City Art Institute, his master of fine arts from Penn State, and is currently Harvard’s Artist in Resistance 2020-21.

About the exhibition: Organizing his work to mirror the structure of a day in TV programming, the artist exhibits individual pieces, from various ongoing series, among each other, just the way episodes of disparate TV shows run back-to-back every day. The range of work presented is akin to the spectrum of television programming: from documentary to cartoon, from commercial break to made-for-TV movies. Tune into Premiere for artworks of familiar silhouette and claymation lands that walk viewers through TV sets of joy, turmoil and loss.

“Parallel to my ongoing bodies of work, is a day in television: back-to-back episodes of shows with distinct storylines, strung together into one day’s worth of a TV channel’s programming. In the selection of shows under each channel’s umbrella, some networks’ ideologies/goals are more apparent than others," said Castañeda.

"The structure of a TV channel intrigues me as a linear form of display and narrative," Castañeda added. "If my seemingly disparate series of work are akin to the many shows broadcast on a single channel, then I can develop and show many series of work, simultaneously. While my work all stems from myself and my experience, operating within the framework of one TV channel which may have everything from cartoons to reality TV shows, documentaries, commercials, music videos, made-for-TV movies, reruns, reunions, (etc.) allows me to breathe a bit. I can focus on several curiosities at once, in parallel, and return to older work when the time is right.”

Art Alley is open daily when the HUB-Robeson Center is open. Class, office and student organization group visits are welcomed and encouraged. Student and staff-led tours are available by emailing galleries@psu.edu.
