UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The HUB-Robeson Galleries present "Magnificare," an exhibition of ceramic sculptures by Marguerita Hagan, on view in the exhibition cases at the HUB-Robeson Center until Feb. 22, 2024.

A reception to unveil the exhibit will be held Nov. 2, 2023, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the HUB-Robeson Galleries. All are welcome to attend.

Marguerita Hagan is a ceramic sculptor based in Philadelphia. Her artwork stems from a deep compassion to care for the plants and animals that share our environment and to work for their survival. In her sculptural installations, Hagan presents finely crafted ceramic sculptures inspired by the forms of water-based life, from great blue whales to diatoms; microscopic, single-cell algae notable for their filigreed, architectural structures of almost unlimited variety.

About 'Magnificare'

Hagan’s exhibition "Magnificare" aims to shed light on a multiplex of senses and dimensions from the eye, mind and heart to sustainable actions. In a cohesive and diverse body of ceramics, the works illuminate interdependence and engagement. Each series in the exhibition honors and celebrates mutually thriving communities and environments. Her play with scale makes physically visible the micro jewels of the ocean and her tributaries.

According to the artist, her work brings greater awareness through wonder while asking the viewer to show honor in return with care. "Magnificare" inclusively magnifies our role and responsibility as stewards of the environment that supports our life on this beautiful blue planet.

About the artist

Throughout her career, Hagan has brought to light the beauty and engineering of the planet’s diverse ecosystems and humans' powerful role as stewards. At this climacteric time of change, her work focuses on the relationship of micro to macro and individual to collective with a deep dive into the ocean. The intricate ceramic forms shine a light on the wonder and respect for the fragile, diverse life with which our lives are intrinsically linked. Hagan’s practice is an ongoing discovery, magnifying our awareness, reciprocal responsibility, and protection of each other and our planet. Seeing these life forms up close, we can marvel at their beauty, appreciate the complexity of their forms, and as Hagan believes, inspire us to take responsibility for their survival.

Marguerita Hagan received her master of fine arts degree from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and her bachelor of fine arts in ceramics at James Madison University. Her projects include collaborations with artists, scientists, and the community, environmental art-science residencies, and lectures. Her work is in private and public collections and exhibited nationally and internationally.
