UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — On Wednesday, April 17, Penn State Sustainability will host Miranda Moore, a sustainable fashion advocate who was crowned Miss Pennsylvania 2023. Moore, an environmental engineer and graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania earning an executive certificate in social impact strategy, will discuss her work within the Miss America organization, and in her life more broadly, to promote sustainable fashion.

“Penn State Sustainability is delighted to partner with EcoReps, Organic Climbing, and the Fashion Society of Penn State to host Miranda Moore for a meaningful discussion on how consumers and producers in the clothing industry can create a better, brighter future for all,” said Grant Rowe, public programming coordinator for Penn State Sustainability.

Moore is deeply involved in conversations regarding sustainability and environmental action. She is the founder of Take Action in Fashion, an organization focused on changing “how we buy, wear, and think about fashion through awareness, representation, and engagement.” The initiative advocates for increased secondhand shopping, outfit repeating, and education surrounding the power people hold in their financial and shopping decisions.

Moore will begin her day at University Park by leading a conversation on the issues of fast fashion and the unsustainability of its material production, joined by a representative of Organic Climbing, a State College climbing gear and apparel company that prioritizes sustainability in its work. She will end the day by introducing the Fashion Society of Penn State’s semesterly fashion show, which will highlight the importance of sustainability.

Additional information on Moore’s visit can be found below and online at Penn State Sustainability’s events calendar:

Moore’s visit aligns with Penn State’s adherence to and promotion of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of 17 goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015 to advance a better future for both people and planet. Of these goals, Moore’s visit strongly connects with SDG 12, Responsible Consumption and Production, as well as SDG 9, Reduced Inequalities.
