UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — University Health Services (UHS) has announced the schedule for its annual flu shot clinics and encourages Penn State students to protect themselves against the influenza virus by getting vaccinated.

“Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses, which attack your respiratory system — nose, throat and lungs,” said Cecilia Devonshire, the UHS infection control nurse manager. “Influenza is commonly called flu, but it is not the same as stomach ‘flu’ viruses that cause vomiting and diarrhea. Getting an annual flu vaccine is the best way to protect yourself, your friends, and your family from getting the flu. Flu shots can also lessen the severity of illness and lower the risk of developing serious complications in those who do become infected.”

UHS, a unit of Student Affairs, will launch the 2022 flu shot clinics at the end of the month. The dates and locations — within the HUB-Robeson Center — are as follows:

  • Sept. 29 — Alumni Hall

  • Oct. 3 — Alumni Hall

  • Oct. 6 — Heritage Hall

  • Oct. 11 — Heritage Hall

  • Oct. 13 — Heritage Hall

  • Oct. 17 — Alumni Hall

The clinics are open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on each of its scheduled dates. Students wishing to attend must make an appointment via myUHS. Walk-ins are not permitted.

Prior to the appointment, students should login to myUHS to verify that they have completed all necessary forms under the “Forms” tab and uploaded their health insurance card under the “Insurance Cards” tab. Students should bring their Penn State ID to the appointment, and it is encouraged that they eat something prior to the administration of the vaccine. More information on the flu clinics can be found on the UHS flu webpage

If they prefer, students can schedule a private appointment with UHS — separate from the clinic — to receive a flu vaccine.

In addition to the clinics, UHS and Vaccinate America — a student-led organization at Penn State — will host an “Influenza Vaxx Faxx” seminar on Oct. 11 in Flex Theater, HUB-Robeson Center at 6p.m. More details will be announced on the UHS Facebook and Instagram accounts, @studentwellnesspsu. Refreshments will be served.
