Libraries’ virtual exhibit celebrates Title IX, women in athletics

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Since the passage of Title IX legislation in 1972, Penn State women’s athletic teams and student-athletes have prospered, winning conference and national championships as well as individual conference and national awards.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the passage of Title IX, the Eberly Family Special Collections Library presents a digital exhibit, “Penn State Women’s Athletics and Title IX: The Successes and Struggles for Equal Access.”

The exhibit documents Penn State women’s athletics in four parts: a brief history of women’s athletics before Title IX, conference and national championship teams, outstanding individual student-athletes in each sport, and the struggle of Penn State administrators, coaches, physical education faculty and instructors to keep women’s athletics part of Title IX legislation through the 1970s and 1980s.

“Penn State Women’s Athletics and Title IX: The Successes and Struggles for Equal Access” is curated by Paul Dzyak, Sports Archivist and is open for viewing at https://sites.psu.edu/nittanylionsandtitleix throughout the spring 2023 semester.
