Library Discovery Hour fall events focus on PSU Press, poison, philanthropy

Penn State University Libraries continues its programming series with September, October, November events appealing to attendees’ wide array of library, literary interests

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State University Libraries continues its Library Discovery Hour programming with fall events in September, October and November, starting with an illustrative Penn State University Press hour featuring its graphic novel imprint Graphic Mundi. All events are open to the public; when space is limited, registration will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.  

Tuesday, Sept. 26, virtual, noon to 1 p.m. ET: “Drawing Our Worlds Together: Graphic Mundi and Penn State University Press” — September’s Library Discovery Hour event is presented by Penn State University Press Editor-in-Chief Kendra Boileau. Virtual attendees will learn more about the press through its Graphic Mundi imprint, which offers graphic novels for adults and young adults that address important topics and research in graphic form. Boileau will explain how and why Graphic Mundi came to be, what it takes to create a graphic novel, and learn about some of the challenges and successes of Graphic Mundi so far.  Zoom registration for the Sept. 26 event is available online.  

Friday, Oct. 13, hybrid, noon to 1 p.m. ET: “Dangerous Books: Smoke, Mold and Poison” — As the October event’s seasonally spooky title notes, hosts will present attendees with haunting tales of mystery that only occur in a library. There will be smoke, there will be tiny creatures, along with poison potions to thrill one and all. Hosted by the University Libraries’ Conservation Centre, presenters invite attendees to see how the University Libraries deals with all of these and more ... if you dare. Limited space is available at the Conservation Centre for in-person attendance, which requires advance registrationZoom-only registration for the Oct. 13 event also is available online.  

Thursday, Nov. 9, virtual, noon to 1 p.m.: “GivingTuesday: Students First”  — Learn more about the global event called GivingTuesday, Penn State’s participation, and how you can help the University Libraries be No. 1! On Nov. 28, the Libraries will join more than 100 Penn State units participating in GivingTuesday to promote student well-being and open access for Penn State University Press. Presenters Cate Fricke of Penn State University Press and Megan Gilpin and Brett Spencer of the University Libraries will provide an inside look at both of these priorities and  share how the University Libraries is putting students first. Library Discovery Hour events give attendees an inside look at today’s Penn State University Libraries and access to the perspectives of experts and students, while they learn more about the University Libraries’ primary priorities: Community, Collections and the Commons. The series also showcases how philanthropy has a positive impact and connects University Libraries donors with other passionate Penn Staters.
