UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Library Discovery Hour series’ May 5 online event, “The Pennsylvania Center for the Book: Celebrating the Commonwealth's Libraries, Books and Literary Heritage,” will highlight the center’s mission to serve Pennsylvania residents, its signature initiatives and Penn State University Libraries’ role as its sponsor.
An affiliate of the Library of Congress Center for the Book — itself established by an act of Congress in 1977 to serve as a focal point for celebrating the legacy of books and the printed word — the Pennsylvania Center for the Book was approved to begin operation in 1984. Following a six-year hiatus, in 2000 the center moved under the sponsorship of the University Libraries. Its mission is to study, honor, celebrate and promote books, reading, libraries and literacy to the residents of the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The Pennsylvania Center for the Book holds several annual juried literary awards for children’s literary authors and poets, a statewide reading initiative, online literary and cultural resources, as well as teaching materials to support children’s and family literacy.
