Penn State University Press announces two department staffing changes

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State University Press has announced two staffing changes in its Editorial, Design, and Production (EDP) department.

Phoebe Fischer, former publishing intern at the University of South Carolina Press, has been named production assistant of Penn State University Press, effective April 6.

“Phoebe’s experience as a publishing intern at the University of South Carolina Press, where she gained exposure to multiple stages of the publishing process, aligns closely with the responsibilities of the production assistant role in the Editorial, Design, and Production department. Her genuine enthusiasm for both print and digital book production immediately stood out. We are delighted to welcome her to the Press and are proud to support the start of her career in academic publishing,” said Regina Starace, art director.

Prior to joining Penn State University Press, Fischer worked as a peer adviser in the University of South Carolina’s Education Abroad office. She also held positions as a program assistant mentor and peer writing tutor in the University’s Peer Writing Lab.

“I'm excited to join Penn State University Press and to contribute to its outstanding work in academic publishing. I look forward to learning more about book production processes as I take this next step in my career,” said Fischer.

Emily Lovett, current production and editorial assistant of Penn State University Press, has been promoted to production coordinator, effective April 27.

“Emily’s years of experience spanning both Acquisitions and EDP have given her a rare understanding of the publishing process from early acquisition through final proofs and ebooks. Her expertise in editorial work and project management, combined with her leadership on accessibility standards and compliance, make her exceptionally well prepared for this role. We are thrilled to welcome her into EDP full time and confident she will hit the ground running!” said Alex Ramos, Managing Editor and Interim Department Head.

Prior to working at Penn State University Press, Lovett worked as a publishing assistant at Medieval Institute Publications and as an instructor of record at Western Michigan University.

“It has been an honor working at Penn State University Press for the last three-and-a-half years, and I am looking forward to this next chapter in the Editorial, Design, and Production department. The Press has always been committed to the highest level of editorial, design, and production quality, and I am excited to continue working with such dedicated and talented colleagues as production coordinator,” said Lovett.

As a vital component of the University community, Penn State University Press reflects many of the University’s academic strengths in the liberal arts. Overall, the press publishes about 90 books and 80 journal titles — approximately 175 issues — annually. Titles published under the Penn State University Press imprint include academic publications by researchers around the world in a number of fields and disciplines for a global readership. Those under the Eisenbrauns imprint include academic books about the languages, archaeology and history of the ancient Near East. The Graphic Mundi imprint includes graphic novels for popular audiences that speak to social, environmental and contemporary cultural issues. The press also recognizes its special responsibility to develop publications about Pennsylvania, both scholarly and popular, that enhance interest in the region and spread awareness of the commonwealth’s history, culture and environment.
