Breastfeeding support classes  now available

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Are you or your spouse or significant other pregnant and considering breastfeeding? The Human Resources’ Breastfeeding Support Program has not stopped any of its monthly prenatal classes due to COVID-19 — in fact, all classes are accessible through Zoom. Classes are currently scheduled through April 2021.

Taking a prenatal class is a great way to decrease anxiety when you are unsure what to expect when breastfeeding. Both classes are taught by an international board-certified lactation consultant (IBCLC) and supported by the latest research. The University’s IBCLC draws on experience from working with mothers and babies for more than 20 years.

PSU-140: "Basics of Breastfeeding "
This class covers information needed to prepare for breastfeeding during the early weeks after giving birth. Topics may include:

  • Establishing your milk supply
  • How to position your baby and have them latch on
  • How to tell if your baby is getting enough milk
  • What is normal newborn behavior?

PSU-141: "Working and Breastfeeding"

Information shared in this class covers balancing work and/or student life when breastfeeding. Topics may include:

  • Milk expression and storage
  • Bottle feeding a breastfed baby
  • Planning for returning to work and/or class

Each class is offered for a nominal fee for all Penn State expectant parents and a support partner, and can be taken separately or back-to-back, depending on your schedule.

To register for an upcoming class, select each of the course titles above and register through the Learning Resource Network. If you have any questions, contact Stephanie Shuey, breastfeeding support coordinator, at breastfeeding@psu.edu.
