Vice President for Outreach Craig Weidemann has announced a call for nominations for the 15th annual Faculty Outreach Award and the fifth annual Community Engagement and Scholarship Award.
The Faculty Outreach Award recognizes Penn State faculty who have made a significant contribution to outreach. Fourteen faculty members have received this award since its inception.
Last year, Collins Airhihenbuwa, professor and head of the department of biobehavioral health in the College of Health and Human Development, received the Faculty Outreach Award for his work addressing health disparities and promotion of cultural equity in health in South Africa and several other African countries.
The Community Engagement and Scholarship award recognizes outstanding Penn State engagement initiatives conducted in partnership with communities. The project selected as the winner of the Community Engagement and Scholarship Award goes on to represent Penn State in the regional W.K. Kellogg Foundation Engagement Award and the national C. Peter Magrath University Community Engagement Award, competitions sponsored by the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities.
Last year “The Pittsburgh Studio: Regenerative Design in Stressed Communities” project, led by faculty member, Kenneth Tamminga of the College of Arts and Architecture, received the Community Engagement and Scholarship Award. Through The Pittsburgh Studio, students and community partners in some of Pennsylvania’s most challenged neighborhoods work together to generate ideas and concepts entered on community improvement through re-greening and sustainable place-making.
“These awards underscore Penn State’s deep commitment to outreach and engagement in partnership with our communities,” said Weidemann.
