John T. Harwood, senior director of Teaching and Learning with Technology, has been appointed Penn State's new associate vice provost for Information Technology. He will replace Jeffrey C. Kuhns, who retired from the position in September. Harwood will lead efforts in strategic planning and coordinate the analysis of the University-wide information technology assessment currently under way.
"I'm delighted that John will be taking on a significant role in providing leadership for Penn State's strategic needs," said Kevin Morooney, vice provost for Information Technology. "John's vision for assessing and enhancing the University's critical relationship with information technology, and the future path this will eventually take, will serve Penn State well."
Harwood has been a faculty member and administrator at the University since 1980, and is the author or editor of three scholarly books and numerous articles. He received his doctorate in English from the University of Nebraska.
During the 30 years he has spent at Penn State, Harwood has taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses for the Department of English and the College of Information Sciences and Technology (IST), and has served on more than 30 doctoral committees.
He also has received grants from the Pew Learning and Technology Program, the Mellon Foundation, the AT&T Foundation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. These grants were awarded in support of efforts to redesign high-enrollment courses and the development of course materials that support cultural diversity.
Harwood serves on the boards of several national or industry groups: the National Information Standards Organization, the National Center for Academic Transformation, the IMS Global Learning Consortium, Adobe, and Blackboard.
