Small section of Schwab Auditorium balcony overhang falls

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Schwab Auditorium was evacuated at approximately 11:25 a.m. this morning (July 27) after a small section of the balcony overhang fell while a Spend the Summer Day program was taking place.

One person was taken to Mount Nittany Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries and another was examined and released by emergency medical technicians on site.

A section of plaster ceiling approximately 2 feet by 8 feet fell with approximately half of the debris falling into a center aisle and some falling on several seats.  Building engineers and environmental health and safety teams are currently assessing the building. The building is closed until further notice.

About 500 people were in the auditorium as part of one of the Spend a Summer Days by Undergraduate Admissions, a program for prospective students and their families. The program, for prospective College of Engineering students, was relocated to the Thomas Building.
