UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Office of Physical Plant and Penn State Transportation Services have shared an update on Eisenhower Parking Deck, including upcoming work that will impact access to the deck and Eisenhower Road.
Since a sinkhole caused by water from a failed underground stormwater pipe was discovered on Aug. 16 near the Eisenhower Deck, there has been continuous monitoring of the facility for any potential changes to the site's conditions. In addition to the continuous monitoring, a third-party engineering analysis, which included field testing, concluded the structure remains safe for use. The Office of Physical Plant is currently working with the third-party engineering firm to determine next steps, including repairs.
To enhance the continued safety of the deck with the onset of winter and the potential for snow accumulation on the roof level, scaffolding and bracing will be erected at Eisenhower Parking Deck, causing some additional parking and roadway impacts on Eisenhower Road.
Reduced lanes on Eisenhower Road and Eisenhower Deck first-level closure through Dec. 8
The following impacts to Eisenhower Road and Eisenhower Deck will be in place through Friday, Dec. 8:
- The ground level section of Eisenhower Deck closest to Eisenhower Road will be closed. Access to the other levels of the deck will remain open.
- Eisenhower Road will have intermittent lane closures. Flaggers will be on site to direct traffic as needed, but delays should be expected.
- Drivers are urged to use extra caution while traveling through the deck, as contractors will be working inside on all levels at various times.
Yellow F surface lot partial closure
Approximately 15 spaces in the Yellow F surface lot across from Eisenhower Deck will be closed for contractor material staging through Friday, Dec. 22.
Sidewalk closure north of Eisenhower Deck
A section of sidewalk located on the north side of Eisenhower Deck along Eisenhower Road will be closed until further notice. Detour signage will be posted to redirect pedestrians.
Eisenhower Road partial closure and north sidewalk closure beginning Dec. 18
Beginning Monday, Dec. 18, Eisenhower Road will be closed between the entrance and exit to Eisenhower Deck, resulting in the following impacts:
- Access to Eisenhower Deck, the Yellow F surface lot, and the Yellow S parking lots will only be available by traveling east on Eisenhower Road from Shortlidge Road.
- Exit from Eisenhower Deck will only be available by traveling east to Bigler Road.
- Exit from the Yellow F surface lot and Yellow S lots will only be available by traveling west to Shortlidge Road.
The impacts that begin Dec. 18 will remain in place until further notice.
