Spanish course designed to prepare health care providers to communicate better

Penn State York is offering a course for fall designed to help prepare professionals in the health care and medical fields to communicate with their Spanish-speaking patients and clients. Spanish for the Health Care Field is geared to providers with little or no formal background in Spanish.

This course will help provide the necessary language and vocabulary to facilitate better communication between health care providers and the growing Spanish-speaking community in York. The course begins from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, and continues through Nov. 19.

Through readings, exercises and interactive classroom activities, participants will learn medical vocabulary and colloquial terms that will help them obtain patient histories, medical insurance and other important information that may not be easily obtained because of language barriers.

In addition to workplace Spanish, the course provides transcultural training. To assure a quality educational experience, class size is limited to 20 students. Cost for the course is $190 plus the cost of the textbook. In addition to Spanish for the Health Care Field, Conversational Spanish II and Russian I are offered for fall. Individuals who travel for business or pleasure will find these courses helpful. Both courses meet at the York AAA Office, 2840 Eastern Blvd., York.

Conversational Spanish II allows participants to continue honing their Spanish language skills. During this 10-week, 20-hour course, participants will learn to expand their vocabulary, perfect grammar skills and learn a greater range of expressions for conversation. The course begins from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, and continues through Nov. 13.  Cost for the course is $200 plus textbook.

Russian I is a 20-hour course and offers students the opportunity to learn the Cyrillic alphabet, speak and understand basic expressions and numbers in conversational Russian, and gain an appreciation for the uniqueness and diversity of Russian-speaking cultures. This course begins from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 9, and continues through Nov. 11. Cost for the course is $190 plus textbook.
