Included at the suggestion of President Ralph Hetzel (1926-47) to show the Morrill Act's "liberal" component, this scene shows liberal arts students at a seminar being taught by Evan Pugh, first president of the University. Behind them, three students in uniform reflect the Act's provision for military training. At the upper right is a forge, at which students work to make early machinery parts. The background, extending to the long mountain ridges in the distance, depicts the mining and industrial regions of Pennsylvania.
