Great article and all those suggestions are useful for cutting down the waste we send to the landfill, such as the over 4 pounds of stuff we throw away every day! Plus, by using those cute plastic plates our kids made us for Mothers Day those many years ago, we can think of our grown kids more often.

- LYDIA BODMAN VANDENBERGH

Another helpful discovery, Ed. Thanks for sharing that find.

For your commute, you might want to check out this new electric power assisted bike:

Thanks for posting this. It will be interesting, if you receive a response, to see if active steps will be taken prompted by your urging. Perhaps more important than the marketing practices of Stylus (and other publishers of higher education resources) is progress toward eventual product digitization. Scholarly publishing remains one of coins of the realm for faculty. But a full transition to digital journal publishing continues to be slow in its full implementation.

- PHILIP J BURLINGAME

No address is given for the CD/DVD drop center at the Centre County Solid Waste Authority office. Which I will admit is a moot point anyway because they are only open during the hours when most people are at work. It would be nice to have a collection site on campus and one person make one trip to the center near the end of the of the collection period.

- THOMAS EDWARD GESELL

Another thing we have been made aware of is that other Penn State campuses are eager to access our educational programming in this way. One of the campuses called to see if we could use technology so new students there could participate in our interactive orientation program, "Drunk Sex or Date Rape." We realized that, while they have a space that works for their new students to congregate and participate, our large venue here (HUB Auditorium) doesn't have the capacity to connect with them. We had not thought about this before, and I hope there is a way to address this because this is an affordable way for other campuses to participate in important educational programming.

- MARGARET ANN LORAH

Thanks Betty! We are exploring expanding this event in the future, but we are dealing with space issues. However, I'd be happy to keep you in the loop and/or share how we did this if you'd like to host a swap in Boucke. Thanks!

- CORINNA HELENA FISHER

What a great idea! Perhaps in October you can include some other units (hint, hint).

- BETTY J HARPER

This is a great example of conservation through elimination! The average refridgerator uses about 149 kilowatt hours a month or 1,788 kwh a year, that's as much as a house uses in a month. At 8 cents/kwh you just saved over $140 dollars every year. . .or more as prices go up.

Nice. . . :)

- ERIK BLAIR FOLEY-DEFIORE

NOTE: This information was sent by Amy Schirf of the Centre County Solid Waste Authority, on Monday, August 9, 2010, to persons (like me) on her mailing list, I forwarded it to the green teams to which I belong. I just want to make sure Amy is cited as the author.

- SHELLY AINA
