42-00 Acquisition of Credit

42-50 Credit by Examination/Proficiency Examination

Credits may be earned through successful completion of comprehensive examinations.

  1. Credit by Examination. When a student requests an examination as a substitute for completing all the usual requirements of a course, the credits received are described as "credits by examination". Such credits in courses offered by the University are accepted as fulfilling degree requirements. A grade of "C" or higher must be earned in the examination for credit to be awarded. A fee for each credit shall be charged. Authorization is required to acquire credits in this manner. Such authorization may not be granted for the purpose of acquiring credit for a course previously completed for which a quality letter grade has been assigned. Credit by examination may not be attained on the satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis.

  1. Credit by Undergraduate Proficiency Examination. When a department offers groups of students an opportunity to take an examination for credit or requires an examination for initial placement in a course or course sequence, the credits received are described as "credits by undergraduate proficiency examination." No fee shall be charged for such examinations. Credit for the exempted course or courses shall be entered on the student's transcript and a symbol of "S" shall be recorded. Credit awarded in this manner does not affect a student's grade-point average at this University. Credit may be awarded only for specific courses offered by the University in which the student demonstrates competency at least equivalent to a grade of "C", and only if the student has not already been awarded equivalent credit under Sections 42-80, 42-90, or under the College Entrance Examination Board's Advanced Placement Program. Such credit shall not be granted for any course that the student has previously failed.
