ERIE, Pa. — The Penn State Behrend track and field teams won the United East Outdoor Championships, which were held at Behrend on May 4 and 5. Head Coach Greg Cooper was named Coach of the Year.
Behrend’s baseball and softball teams also were in action last week. Here are the scores and highlights:
Baseball
- Mount Union 7, Penn State Behrend 5
- Penn State Behrend 6, Adrian 5
Chase Palmer, a junior from Brookville, earned his 100th career hit – a bunt single – against Mount Union. Daniel Boehme, a junior from Peters Township, earned his 100th hit in the win over Adrian.
Softball
- Penn State Behrend 4, Carlow 0
- Penn State Behrend 8, Carlow 3
With the sweep of Carlow, the Lions finished the season with a 17-0 record in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play – their first perfect in-conference season since 2009. The team will host the AMCC tournament, which begins May 9.
Men’s track and field
- First (of nine teams) at the United East Outdoor Championship
Alex Cotton, a sophomore from Saxonburg, won the shot put with a 15.52-meter throw. He was named the United East Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year. Kody Klein, a junior from North East, won the 1,500-meter race (4:04.58) and the 800-meter race (1:55.70).
Women’s track and field
- First (of 10 teams) at the United East Outdoor Championship
Julia Balaski, a sophomore from Mercer, won the javelin event with a 39.16-meter throw – a United East and school record. Lindsey Hartle, a sophomore from Pittsburgh, won the 1,000-meter race (47:39.43) and was named the United East Women’s Outdoor Co-Track Athlete of the Year.
