UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Penn State School of Music will present the final installment of the "American Mavericks, Malcontents, and Mischief Makers" recital series, an evening of bold artistry and innovative music-making performed by School of Music faculty and students. The performance takes place at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18, in the Recital Hall, with hors d'oeuvres beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the Eleanor Duncan Armstrong Atrium.
The program features Stevie Ray Vaughan’s "Lenny" for solo electric guitar performed by Jesse Moore, George Antheil’s "Sonata for Trumpet and Piano" performed by George Carpten, and a pre-performance talk by Distinguished Professor Marica Tacconi on Antheil’s notorious “Bad Boy” identity. Mezzo-soprano Dawn Pierce brings to life Rosephanye Powell’s "Miss Wheatley’s Garden," a stunning vocal work that pays homage to history and resilience.
The evening continues with "Gamin" from William Grant Still’s "Suite for Violin and Piano," performed by Torra Bridges, and "Pit Band" by William Albright, featuring Anthony J. Costa on clarinet, David Stambler on saxophone, and Kathy Gattuso-Cinatl on piano. Stacy Garrop’s "Silver Dagger" showcases the artistry of Naomi Seidman on flute, Kim Cook on cello, and Ann Deighton on piano. The recital concludes with George Crumb’s mesmerizing "Voice of the Whale," an evocative work for piano, electric cello, and electric flute, performed by Kahley Mitchell, Isaac McNulty and Yanun Huang.
