Microbiome Center to host ‘Changing Microbiomes’ symposium in early June

Early bird registration closes April 1

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The inaugural Penn State microbiome symposium, titled “Changing Microbiomes Symposium,” will be held from May 31 to June 3, 2022, at the Mountain View Country Club at the Wyndham Garden Inn, 310 Elks Club Road, Boalsburg, Pennsylvania.

The Changing Microbiomes Symposium will bring together researchers working at the bleeding edge of the transition to functional and process-driven microbiome research. These discoveries transcend systems; therefore, the symposium will span terrestrial and aquatic contexts and host-associated and free-living microbial communities.

The organizing committee, which includes faculty from University Park and the Commonwealth Campuses, looks forward to sharing with others the vibrant community of Microbiome researchers that call the Penn State Microbiome Center home.

Going forward, the Microbiome Center symposium will be a biennial event to create an ongoing, supportive and diverse environment for microbiome researchers to attend, learn and network at every career stage.

“The conference will create exceptional opportunities for Penn State students and researchers to make inter-and trans-disciplinary connections across the diverse community doing cutting-edge research on Microbiomes,” said Liana Burghardt, assistant professor in the Plant Science Department at Penn State. “We are grateful to the generous funders that have enabled us to create this opportunity, which has helped us keep registration costs low, provided funding for speakers, travel grants for attendees, and professional development opportunities.”

The Changing Microbiomes Symposium is sponsored by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) Agricultural Microbiomes in Plant Systems and Natural Resources program. Additional funding is provided by the College of Agricultural Sciences, the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences and other academic units at Penn State.

This event will be held in person but may change to a virtual delivery if necessary. For the most up-to-date information, review Penn State’s current guidelines for in-person events. Interested participants are encouraged to register online prior to the early bird deadline on April 1.

There is also an opportunity for attendees to submit an abstract and be considered to present a talk or poster at the conference. Complete registration and submission details can be found on the event website.
