UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-- The Dr. Keiko Miwa Ross Student Farm is hosting its 4th annual "Plant Powered PSU" event from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27. Guests will have the chance to explore plant-based foods and meals through food samples, activities and educational stations. The event is free and open to the public, and it will be held at St. Paul’s Methodist Church in downtown State College. Guests should enter the church lobby from E. Calder Way.

"Plant Powered PSU" will showcase the availability of plant-based foods located in the State College area, and how easy and delicious plant-based food choices can be. A new highlight at this year’s event is the chance to make a smoothie using a bike-powered blender, and the opportunity to win one of several door prizes.

The open house-style event is a way for people to explore plant-based eating even if they’ve never tried plant-based foods before. Student organizations, including EcoReps, Student Nutrition Association and HealthWorks will be on hand to talk about the nutritional and environmental benefits of plant-based meals.

“I think plant-based eating can sometimes be daunting for folks who haven’t really tried it before,” said Marta Plumhoff, food systems coordinator and one of the event organizers. “There are several questions that naturally arise about nutrition, taste and cooking, and it’s hard to change your diet. That’s why I love this event — it’s a great way to explore answers to these questions, learn about how to make it work for your life and try some of these foods out.”

The event is intended for anyone who has ever been curious about what some of the many meat alternatives actually taste like, or about how to prepare simple plant-based meals that are quick, delicious and affordable.

More information about the event can be found on the Student Farm website. The Student Farm is a unit of Penn State Student Affairs. The event is made possible thanks to donations from Giant Food Stores, Webster’s Bookstore Café, Nature’s Pantry and Wegmans.
