"Hidden Gems" is a new ongoing series highlighting many of the places and experiences available across Penn State to the campus and local communities.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Every Friday during the spring and fall semesters, an unassuming white building just across the street from Beaver Stadium opens its doors to the public for a few hours. Inside, customers can find high-quality steaks, seasonal sausage flavors and select cuts of meat through a storefront maintained by the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences, called the Butcher Block.

The Butcher Block is open from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Friday, but it's recommended that anyone interested in getting more in-demand cuts — such as oxtail or bacon – arrive earlier in the day, just in case they sell out. The Butcher Block also provides meat products such as dry salami to dining locations at University Park and the Commonwealth Campuses, and Bryce Jordan Center catering. Additional options, such as jerky and summer sausage, are available through the Penn State Berkey Creamery.

Those interested in keeping up with the Butcher Block can send an email to its Listserv (L-AG-BUTCHERBLOCK-subscribe-request@lists.psu.edu) to be added to a newsletter.
